The current global energy situation presents significant challenges and opportunities. The European Union and Uruguay aim to work together to shape the future through renewable energies.
In this context, IV European Investment Forum will be held on 24 and 25 October in Montevideo. This event is organized by the EU Delegation to Uruguay, the InsPYraME UE project, implemented by the Chamber of Commerce and Services of Uruguay and the Eurochamber in Uruguay, and the EU Public Diplomacy Project in South America, in collaboration with Uruguay XXI and Eurochambres.
The event will involve a broadcast live conference on 24 October and a virtual business round on 25 October, to facilitate contacts between Uruguayan and European companies and governmental actors on the renewable energies sector.
The EU has decided to transform its energy system, putting to en end its dependence on fossil fuels in order to achieve Europe’s climate neutrality goal by 2050. To this end, in May 2022, the REPowerEU Plan listed a number of actions indispensable to achieve these objectives, including: energy savings, diversification of energy supply and accelerated deployment of renewable energies. This green transformation will strengthen economic growth, security and climate action for Europe and its partners.
Uruguay is at the forefront of the use of renewable energy sources. The transformation of its energy matrix was possible thanks to strong European private investments in wind and photovoltaic farms as well as the biomass generated by the pulp mills. In addition, European technology is present in most of the renewable energy projects in the country.
In 2021 Uruguay began its second energy transition focusing on development of a green hydrogen, strengthening a smart electricity grid for efficient coordination of supply and demand, and incorporating new technologies for energy storage.
The EU is an important trading partner for Uruguay and has established itself as the first foreign investor in the country with 40% of Foreign Direct Investment and a FDI stock of more than € 28 bn in 2020. The largest private investments in the country in recent years have been European and have had a major impact on growth and jobs: wood pulp, port services, logistics, forestry, telecommunications, finance, tourism and, as mentioned, renewable energy.
